Learning Management Systems
There are many ways to effectively use a Learning Management System in an elementary classroom. One of the key benefits of an LMS is that it can help to streamline communication between teachers, students, and parents. Teachers can use the platform to share announcements, post assignments, and provide feedback on student work. Students can use the LMS to access learning materials, complete assignments, and communicate with their teacher. Parents can use the platform to stay informed about their child's progress and to communicate with the teacher.
Another benefit of using an LMS in an elementary classroom is that it can help to promote student engagement and motivation. By providing students with access to a range of multimedia resources, such as videos, images, and interactive activities, teachers can help to create a more dynamic and engaging learning experience. Additionally, many LMS platforms include gamification features, such as badges and leaderboards, which can help to motivate students and encourage them to take an active role in their own learning.
In my three years of teaching, I have utilized Google Classroom as an LMS in my classroom and could see myself continuing to use it in my classroom. One feature that I particularly enjoy about Google Classroom is its user-friendly interface, which makes it easy for both teachers and students to navigate. The platform provides a range of tools that allow teachers to efficiently manage their classroom and distribute assignments, including the ability to create and share announcements, assign and grade work, and communicate with students. Additionally, Google Classroom integrates with other Google Suite apps, such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, which can help to streamline workflow and increase productivity. Google Classroom is included as a free service for anyone with a personal Google account and in most cases, teachers and students can access Google Classroom using a Google account provided by their school. (M., 2021) This is another pro of using Google Classroom as an LMS in the classroom.
While Google Classroom is a powerful and user-friendly tool, there are some potential drawbacks to using it as an LMS. One of the main concerns is that it may not be suitable for all types of learning environments. For example, some teachers may prefer a more traditional approach to teaching, and may find it difficult to adapt to the use of technology in the classroom. Another potential issue with Google Classroom is that it can be limited in terms of its features and functionality. While the platform provides a range of tools for managing assignments and communicating with students, it may not be as comprehensive as some other LMS options. Google Classroom doesn't always "play well" with websites or apps that are not in the Google Suite. An Education Week article mentions, "The risk is that teachers just adapt and go with the flow of what Google allows rather than challenge it with something more pedagogically meaningful."
Overall, I believe that Google Classroom is a powerful tool that can be used effectively as a Learning Management System, and I would certainly consider using it in this way.

What is the view of primary teachers in your building using Google Classroom as the LMS? I know that when I used it in 5th grade it was really nice, especially creating different courses for workshops in addition to the main classroom. I felt like there was not enough video/audio tools for my little learners. I would be interested to see and know more about how Google does not play well with websites and other apps. Even though they may not be part of the Google suite, I would imagine that being such a vast search engine it would have the capability to function with anything internet based.
ReplyDeleteIs Google Classroom the LMS that your school requires, or did you get the option to choose? I wonder if you would stick with it given the choice, or if you'd look into something else to see if it is more useful for your grade level. I'm also always looking for tips and tricks, so I wonder if there is anything amazing that you've discovered since you've been using it more recently than when I did in 2015 when Classroom was first released. I agree that the potential is always there for things not to work, and when we rely on an LMS, there may be more chances for something going wrong but I think the benefits outweigh the potential risks!
ReplyDeleteI feel as though we have similar opinions to Google Classroom. It is very useful as a platform for assigning classwork. I appreciate how user friendly it is for children and for myself. This makes it seem like a great LMS for younger students.
