I often find myself attempting to find various ways to engage and educate my students effectively. One approach that has been successful for both myself and my students is the use of Serious Gaming in the classroom. However, when considering whether to incorporate Serious Gaming into my teaching, I was faced with challenges and needed to apply research findings in order to meet the specific needs of my students. The first challenge is determining the appropriateness of Serious Gaming for my students' age group. While there is lots of research on Serious Gaming, it doesn't always address the specific developmental needs and learning styles of young children at the elementary level. Collaborative Technology

As an educator, I constantly strive to provide the best learning experience for my students, and I believe that incorporating collaborative technology can enhance their engagement and foster meaningful interactions. Student collaboration teaches learners a valuable lesson: how to use the people around them as a resource. (Reading, 2016)  However, I am faced with a variety of dilemmas as I attempt to apply what is known from research to the unique needs of my students. There are many ways to effectively use a Learning Management System in an elementary classroom. One of the key benefits of an LMS is that it can help to streamline communication between teachers, students, and parents. Teachers can use the platform to share announcements, post assignments, and provide feedback on student work. Students can use the LMS to access learning materials, complete assignments, and communicate with their teacher. Parents can use the platform to stay informed about their child's progress and to communicate with the teacher. Digital Learning

iPads in the Classroom My district has implemented one-to-one iPads for elementary level students. Because I am a fifth-grade teacher, this is the last year they will be using iPads before moving to the middle and high school level where they will be using MacBooks. In preparation for middle school, oftentimes when I implement iPad technology into lessons, I try to utilize plug-in keyboards my school has and make the iPad feel more like a MacBook.  When implementing iPads into my lessons and curriculum it's important to consider the needs of my individual students and how they learn best. I also consider the goals of my lesson and how the iPads could enhance the learning experience. Digital Citizenship

It is important to introduce and reinforce digital citizenship concepts and practices at an early age and continue these concepts and practices throughout a student's academic journey. I think the timing and methods of teaching digital citizenship skills will vary depending on various factors, such as demographics. However, I strongly believe that digital citizenship should be integrated, whenever possible, in the regular classroom and should be supported in the classroom with continuous discussions and activities. Emerging Technologies for 5th Grade

I am just finishing my third year of teaching at the elementary level. My first year of teaching I was in a smaller school district teaching at a Title I school in fourth grade. In that particular role, I was not only challenged with behaviors and extreme academic needs, but teaching remotely due to the pandemic. Throughout this year my students were one-to-one with Chromebooks. After my first year of teaching I moved to teach in a larger school district and happened to be placed in a school that is higher income. In this new role, I remained in fourth grade but had to switch from Chromebooks to one-to-one iPads. After my second year of teaching, I moved up with the same group of students to teach fifth grade. Throughout my limited years of teaching, as well as student teaching throughout my undergraduate, I have been able to experience many different grade levels.
